5 BROADGATE

Designed by leading architectural practice Make, 5 Broadgate is the new London home for financial services firm, UBS. Turning conventional office design on its head, Make started with a solid object and cut into it, to allow light in and views out where needed. The result resembles a giant metal engine block that gives the feeling of robustness and solidity.

A key of the clients’ brief was to consolidate the majority of UBS’s London workforce. To enable the build of the project, two existing buildings on the Broadgate Estate would have to be demolished. The new-steel clad construction provides over 700,000 sq ft of new space, incorporating four football pitch-sized trading floors able to accommodate 3,000 traders. The 12-storey “groundscraper” also includes space for 2,400 additional support and management staff.

It may be one of the biggest, but 5 Broadgate is also one of the most sustainable office buildings. Key environmental features include photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels, a substantial area of green roof, 70% waste recycling, FSC certified timber and a BREEAM Excellent rating. Overall, 5 Broadgate’s energy conservation level is nearly 50% better than required by regulations.

Shadbolt manufactured and supplied a multitude of doors to the project, including Signal White (RAL 9003) paint lacquered doors with FD30, FD60 and FD120 fire performance and sound attenuating ratings. In addition, straight grain chevron matched American black walnut doors and matching frames were also supplied. In keeping with the sustainable design of the building, all doors supplied were FSC certified.
