Environmental Action Plan

Shadbolt have for many years striven to adopt environmentally responsible policies in all aspects of sourcing materials and manufacturing. In recent years, as protection of the environment has become a major issue, we have made continuous progress to meet the concerns of today.

We are taking positive actions rather than just ticking boxes on checklists. Detailed information on our numerous initiatives and positive achievements is given here.


Our main policies are to:

  • Always wherever possible to source materials from certified sustainable sources.
  • To gain and maintain certification for our own operations.
  • To encourage our customers, specifiers and end users to similarly adopt responsible policies for the sourcing and use of materials.
  • Shadbolt participate in schemes to promote sustainable forest management, assured through third party certification, and we can provide up-to-date guidance on environmental issues in relation to the specification of veneered doors and panels.


Timber – the sustainable material
Timber, our main raw material, is the only truly renewable and sustainable building material – recyclable, non-toxic and bio-degradable, and far more energy-efficient than other materials.
Properly managed forests will provide a continuing supply of timber indefinitely.
Timber also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Growing timber removes carbon from the atmosphere, helping to combat global warming and climate change.
It is also energy-efficient to produce compared with most other building materials.
It is therefore our policy to make maximum use of responsibly-sourced timber wherever available, and to encourage our suppliers and customers to do the same.
Our independently certified timber products will help specifiers, contractors and end users to meet the requirements of their own environmental management systems, and of their clients who will increasingly demand this assurance. Using sustainable timber sources encourages the expansion of sustainable forestry, increasing the carbon capture effect still further, through planting of new trees.

Forest Stewardship Council®
FSC® (FSC-C011809) is an international, independent, non-profit non-governmental organisation. FSC® runs a global forest certification system that has two key elements: Forest Management and CoC (Chain of Custody) certification. The CoC scheme enables timber produced in certified forests to be tracked all the way from the forest to the end use, preventing the possibility that non-certified material might be substituted at some stage.
FSC® certifies that products originate from forests which are managed according to internationally agreed social and environmental principles and criteria. The FSC® scheme is recognised by WWF, FoE and Greenpeace, and by indigenous peoples’ groups and trade unions.
It has the power to endorse guarantees that the forest of origin of materials has been independently inspected and evaluated as complying with internationally agreed environmental, social and economic standards.

The FSC® mark
Certified products can carry the FSC® mark, which indicates that timber is known to come from an FSC® forest audited by an FSC® accredited body. This enables specifiers and customers to choose timber and timber products with confidence that they are not contributing to the destruction of the world’s forests. The FSC® mark gives an assurance of a consistent high standard of forest management and provides proof of best practice. It also discourages the use of bogus claims by less scrupulous companies.
Moreover, buying from certified sources provides an incentive for suppliers to adopt or expand good forestry practice.

Chain of Custody (CoC) certificate
Shadbolt hold an FSC® Chain of Custody (CoC) certificate which confirms that FSC assessors have inspected our premises and verified that we have systems for demonstrating full traceability and control of certified material in our works.
In order to be eligible to carry the FSC® mark, products originating from certified sources have to be tracked from the forest through all the steps of the production process until they reach the end user. This tracking process must itself be independently certified.
The CoC certificate shows that the certified timber is traceable through every stage of production, manufacture and incorporation in a finished building. Substitution of a non-certified material would break the chain and invalidate the certificate.

FSC® Chain of Custody certificate

Percentage certification
Where there is a lack of suitable raw materials, percentage certification is used to establish a minimum proportion of sustainable material in a product. This is reflected in the FSC® Chain-of-Custody (CoC) Certificate.

Shadbolt’s policies
Our policy is always to use FSC® certified materials where available in suitable quality and sufficient quantity to meet specifiers’ and customer’s demands. There is a wide variety of FSC® certified timbers available.
Moreover, the range of FSC® certified products is growing as new resources become available, encouraged by client and specifier demand.
Shadbolt can provide up-to-date guidance on environmentally-responsible specification of veneered doors and panels.

Shadbolt’s invoices and other documentation where applicable will state that FSC materials are being supplied and will carry the chain of custody certificate number which can be verified with FSC®.

Where any non-certified timber is used, we will if required provide written confirmation from our suppliers that all timber comes from a legal source and that no timber species used are listed in CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) appendixes as endangered or threatened.

We buy only from suppliers known to us over many years who have themselves adopted a formal environmental policy, and who can provide evidence of their timber sources.
Shadbolt’s policy is to buy FSC® certified veneer whenever it is available, and to actively discourage the use of veneer species considered to be at risk. By doing so we maintain pressure on suppliers to produce such material in place of non-certified material.

Door cores
Our Shadmaster FD30 and FD60 fire door cores are also available with FSC® certification on a percentage claim basis to special order. Due to supplier limitations this may require an additional lead time of approximately 8 weeks.

MDF and chipboard cores are available with FSC® certification on a percentage claim basis.

Lippings, frames and glazing beads
FSC® certified hardwood is available for all these in a range of species.


Shadbolt actions
We work with and strongly encourage all our suppliers, contractors and subcontractors with whom we deal to themselves buy and use properly certified timber materials and products.

We encourage architects and designers to specify certified sustainable timber materials and products. We can also assist them in ensuring that their specification is followed through in the actual purchase and use of products in the finished building, by explaining how chain of custody schemes work and how conformance of products can be checked.


Energy use in the factory
Our factory heating system operates on warm air produced from a wood burner incorporating a low-emission carbon filter. 100% of the factory wood waste is chipped and burned in this system to provide us with warm air heating in winter.
This heating is topped up with individually controlled and therefore more efficient natural gas tube heaters.
Electricity use in the works is monitored by timers so as to avoid unnecessary use of power, lights etc when not needed.

Vehicles and transport
Our dispatch department is closely managed with planned deliveries to ensure that transport is used in the most efficient way. We are also able to meet customer needs by timing of deliveries to eliminate the need for storage on site; this reduces the risk of damage and wastage of finished products.
Our delivery vehicles are fuel-efficient low-carbon models conforming to the latest Euro 6 emission criteria and all qualify for the London LEZ (low emissions zone).
All vehicles in the company car fleet are fuel-efficient low-carbon emitting diesel models. Staff are encouraged by incentives to share cars for travel to and from work.

Reduction of carbon emissions
All the above initiatives contribute to the reduction of our greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions, thus reducing our carbon footprint.
In moving to our new factory in October 2006 we received a grant from the Carbon Trust, recognising the actions we have taken to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. For the future we plan to design a method of properly measuring our carbon footprint so we can introduce formal targets as part of our Environmental Management System.


Waste management
Shadbolt actively seek to reduce and where possible eliminate waste through:

  • More efficient use of raw materials.
  • Promoting the re-use and recycling of materials in our works.
  • Making use of recycled materials for packaging and stationery requirements.
  • Our waste management policy is controlled by the managing director of the company.

Waste reduction and management

Manufacturing operations
We have introduced new and modified production methods to maximise materials usage and to minimise waste.
In moving to our new factory at Braintree in 2007 we invested in new machinery, all computer-controlled to optimise use of material and cut waste. For example, working closely with our suppliers and with machine manufacturers we have introduced new equipment with optimisation software ensuring the best use of board materials. This enables us to receive door cores at a much greater size than before, reducing our machining waste by 20%.
Board offcuts are used for small panels and door overpanels, reused for pallets, or converted to wood chips (used for factory heating). We employ spliced sections for door lippings and frames (where not visible). This enables us to take advantage of offcuts of timber sections which would otherwise be scrapped.
We have introduced more economical and environmentally friendly product ranges such as the Shadbolt Atlantic brand, which make fuller use of materials. Adoption of a more flexible approach to veneered doors and frames enables us to use complete veneer logs, and to exploit remnant veneer stocks.
We make use of standardised components where possible, eg for glazing, intumescent/acoustic seals, frame/lipping sections and species.
We have improved production organisation to reduce the number of times that materials and components are handled. Materials are delivered direct to the production line to minimise the need for packaging and handling. Consequently, KPI productivity measurements have increased significantly since the move to our new factory.
We are able to advise users – specifiers, contractors, customers and clients – on selection of products to minimise waste (eg more economical methods of veneer matching) and we encourage consultation us at design stage to achieve this.
Our complete factory-made doorsets help to reduce site waste, and any waste produced is better managed in the works than is usually possible on a building site.

Management procedures
Our production control makes extensive use of computerisation and bar coding to enable us to maximise efficiency and reduce waste. Material use is carefully planned to avoid over-ordering.
We have also refined our office procedures and production processes to reduce waste and encourage recycling.

Our products generally require robust packaging to avoid damage which would lead to waste of manufactured goods. Therefore we undertake to use the most environmentally friendly packaging.
All our paper and card-based packaging is either made from recycled material, or if new is derived from wood from well-managed forests, where possible from FSC certified supplies and ISO 14001 registered suppliers.
Disposal or reuse of packaging on site is outside our control but we encourage recycling where we are able to.

Waste disposal and recycling

We undertake to maximise our systematic recycling of paper and wood materials throughout our works, office and factory production wherever possible. All of our paper and cardboard waste is collected by a licensed waste carrier for recycling.
Other office and factory waste is recycled through licensed waste contractors where possible.
This includes archived paper, waste paper and drawings which are not further usable. Empty printer toner/ink cartridges are also recycled. A new extraction system in the factory collects all wood waste (sawdust and chippings) which are then fed into our wood burner and used to heat the factory.

Pollution control
We use an extensive local exhaust ventilation system throughout the factory to keep dust to a minimum, with regular monitoring of noise and dust emissions.
We use water-based glue lines where possible.
We employ licensed agents to ensure safe disposal, or where possible recycling, of waste products that may be potentially harmful to the environment. We retain copies of the relevant certificates of compliance. This covers for example:

  • recycling of dirty thinners and excess paint
  • recycling of all solvent waste.

Our polishing workshop is designed to minimise effluent discharges and prevent accidental air and water pollution. We have modified our processes to incorporate a UV lacquer line which produces 0% (zero) waste and is solvent-free; this represents 80% of our polishing requirement.
Where wet lacquer is used we ensure the use of high solid content lacquers within dry filter spray booths; the filters capture overspray and allow the material to dry within the filter, allowing for safe and efficient disposal without the risk of discharge.


We actively inform and train our workforce at all levels in the principles and practice of our Environmental Management System, environmental responsibility, and how all personnel can contribute to the company’s environmental performance.


Local community
Our aim is to establish and maintain a responsible relationship with our local community by, for example:

  • Employing local people as much as possible.
  • Reducing external noise from the works, especially at night, eg by means of acoustic baffling.
  • Ensuring that our factory is well-maintained and does not detract from the local surroundings and amenities.

Timber sources
We participate in the FSC certification of timber supplies as described above. These ensure that timber-sourcing areas provide protection to internationally agreed standards for indigenous peoples and local workers, conservation of biodiversity, and protection of water resources, soils and ecosystems.

We comply with or exceed all legal and regulatory requirements applicable to our operations, including factory and noise emissions, health and safety.
Factory emissions are covered by our PPC Permit under the Pollution Prevention and Control (England and Wales) Regulations 2000 (amended).
COSHH regulations are fully complied with by complete assessments, regularly reviewed and signed off by senior management. Noise emissions are controlled to within local standards which have been agreed with the environmental protection office.

We make every effort to promote our policies for environmental responsibility in our website, literature, quotations and other sales documentation, and to raise awareness among our suppliers and customers.
