Located on the edge of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and next to Westfield Stratford, the new 42 storey Manhattan Loft Gardens building cuts an extraordinary sight. Designed by SOM for developer Manhattan Loft Corporation, the building utilises a cantilevered perimeter truss system to remove half of the supporting columns to create two notches in the building. These notches create open spaces within the tower and gives the appearance that the building is balancing itself out. Post-tensioning methods required to achieved this required engineering on a scale usually reserved for infrastructure projects.
The Stratford Hotel is a new design hotel occupying the first seven storeys of the building with 248 loft apartments above. Featuring 146 rooms, the hotel is accessed via a triple-height lobby which acts as the social hub, featuring a restaurant, bar and open piazza leading out to Stratford International. Custom-made facilities include a state-of-the-art gym, spa and cinema.
We were heavily involved with the project, manufacturing and supplying a number of different veneered elements to the hotel. Bespoke FSC® certified slip matched straight grain European oak veneered fire resistant doors, panels, and flush rebated washroom cubicle fronts were supplied to all areas of the hotel. In order to match the architect’s colour scheme, all veneers were finished with stain and factory lacquered in tones of warm grey. In addition, a host of veneered panels were supplied for furniture items including reception desks, credenzas and planters.
