Flame spread lining panels

Shadbolt can provide veneered wall and ceiling panels to meet the flame spread restriction requirements of UK Class 0 or Class 1 to BS 476 Parts 6 and 7, or European Class C to BS EN 13501-1.

Shadbolt_flame_spread_rated_lining_panels

The National and European classifications are not automatically equivalent. Products cannot claim a particular Class unless tested to the relevant standard. Shadbolt panel performance is backed by test evidence to the appropriate standard.

Regulations requirements

In order to reduce the risk of internal fire spread, UK and European building regulations restrict the flame spread or reaction to fire performance of internal surfaces of walls and ceilings. Surfaces are classified according to the results of standard tests.

Under current UK Building Regulations Approved Document B2, performance testing and classification to either the National standard BS 476 or to the European standard BS EN 13501-1 is permitted.

At some time in the future it is anticipated that BS 476 will be withdrawn and only the European standard will be accepted.

CLASS 0 AND CLASS 1 PANELS

These Shadbolt veneered panels achieve Class 0 or Class 1 flame spread performance to UK Building Regulations without the use of impregnation treatments or intumescent lacquers.

The panels can generally preserve the natural beauty of our wood veneers, subject to the proviso explained below.

  • Class 0 performance means that the panels can be used as wall linings in any location under Building Regulations B2. Class 1 panels are suitable in most locations.
  • Panels preserve the natural beauty and variety of wood veneer (subject to the proviso above).
  • Abrasion resistance and durability is equal to standard finishes.
  • The same finish can be provided on doors, frames, non fire-rated panels, trims and skirtings, giving consistent appearance throughout a scheme.
  • Excellent mechanical performance and stability in varying temperature and humidity conditions.
  • Also available with FSC® certification subject to special order.

Construction
Panels have a high-density homogeneous timber particle board substrate with a wood veneer facing. Hardwood edge lippings may be exposed or concealed, square or shaped as required.

Size
All panels are purpose-made to sizes required, up to a maximum of 3000mm x 1220mm.

Panel treatment

Due to unavailability of our previous (Class 0) substrate material, we now offer Class 0 and Class 1 panels using Euroclass B MDF with clear Classolac lacquer finish to the veneer. This treatment may possibly cause discolouration in some lighter shades of veneers, and we would therefore submit samples for approval before manufacture.

This performance appraisal is backed by the lacquer manufacturer’s own test evidence to BS 476 part 6:1989 and part 7:1997.

We do not recommend the use of intumescent lacquers, as these can later develop a stained or hazing effect; consequently we could not guarantee the panel appearance over any length of time.

Panels are veneered and factory pre-finished with two coats of clear non-intumescent lacquer, either semi-matt (20% gloss) or high gloss. The appearance is the same as that of a standard panel or door with the same veneer, so that a uniform appearance can be achieved throughout a scheme.

The veneer may also be stained before lacquering.

Spread of flame and fire propagation
Shadbolt panels achieve Class 0 or Class 1 performance as defined by Building Regulations Approved Document B Appendix A.

This performance appraisal is backed by the lacquer manufacturer’s own test evidence to BS 476 part 6:1989 and part 7:1997.

EUROCLASS FIRE RATED PANELS

Shadbolt can offer panels rated European Class C for reaction to fire accordingto BS EN 13501-1,based on independent testing. Copies of test reports are available, and we have an ongoing programme of further testing.

This performance is achieved without the use of impregnation treatments or intumescent lacquers.

  • Class C performance means that the panels can be employed as wall linings equivalent to Class 1 use in any location under Building Regulations B2.
  • Preservation of the natural beauty and variety of wood veneer.
